Grandma's Irises

I transplanted some irises from my grandma's garden.
I think I've mentioned before that my grandma loved purple just like I do.
Or maybe I should say that I love purple just like she did.
These flowers make me smile and think of her every time I walk past them.

Found this photo from 2010.
Mike was on a trip to Utah and went to see my Grandma.
He snapped a picture of her with her irises for me.
I'm so glad that he did that!

Till We Meet Again

We had a very nice funeral for my Grandma. It's still hard to believe that she is really gone. I always thought she would be a permanent fixture in my life...she still is, but in a different way I guess.

It was a very emotional couple of days, but also really good too.
There was a formal viewing Sunday night at the mortuary. All of the granddaughters and great-granddaughters were given a chance to choose one of grandma's many handkerchiefs to keep. She had so many of them, I'm glad that Grace, Anna and I each get to have one.

It was nice to see so many cousins and family members that I haven't seen in a while. There was a huge turnout, which doesn't surprise me at all...my Grandma touched so many lives for good!

Monday morning was the funeral in Marriott. I was really nervous because I'd been asked to sing. I had practiced the song on my own, but hadn't had an accompanist until this morning and then that wasn't going so well and I was really worried...but then Carol Thomas became my hero and stepped in and played for me. She is simply amazing that she could do that. I wouldn't have been able to get through it without her. But, I did get through it and my prayers were answered and I didn't even lose control of my emotions. I just had to make sure and not look at my mom and dad, or any of my aunts and uncles, or my siblings for that matter. I'm so thankful that I had that opportunity to sing. I love my grandma so much and I'm glad that I could pay special tribute to her through song.

Anyway, after the services we had a luncheon and took a bunch of pictures. Sadly, I don't know if we will have that many family members together ever again. The guy from the mortuary mentioned that we set a record at the funeral for the number of rows they had to rope off for family.

We got some group shots of each of the different families, all of my grandma's children are still living, except one who passed away as a baby.
Our family group shot, I think we are only missing Shell's kids and Jan's husband, Dale.
My family. I love these people so much!
Yep...we are crazy, I think my grandma would smile, she loved our silliness!
That evening we spent some time at the hotel together.
Unfortunately Jan had several seizures, and that was really emotional for all of us. I hate that she has to go through so much! Mike and I went and had treats at The Cheesecake Factory with most of my siblings.
We had a great time and shared some much needed laughter. On the way back to the hotel, I got pulled over for having expired plates...ha ha! Oh boy, that was great since I was driving all my siblings in the Suburban. One more thing we have to take care of.

Anyway, the next day I went and got massages with my mom, my Aunt Georgia, Marcy and Shannon and Shell and Jan. I'm not usually one for massages, but I liked this one. I think we all needed them, especially Jan and my mom. Then we headed to the cemetery for the graveside service. It was short and very sweet. Had last chance to talk to family and take some more pictures and say a last farewell to grandma.
So, like I said, it was an emotional couple of days, but also a celebration of family, love and of one of the most amazing women I'll ever know. I'm so thankful for my knowledge of the gospel and that I know that families are forever.

I love this picture of my grandma with my kids.
She wasn't afraid to participate in a silly face picture :)

An Angel Went Home

Yesterday my sweet Grandma Elmer passed away.
It was around 5 pm I think.
My mom was already there, so I went to Ogden with my Dad, Jan, Joe and Greg.
I was glad I could go and give my mom a hug.
I'm very happy for my grandpa right now, I'm sure he is so happy to be with my grandma again!
Everyone was handling it pretty well.
I think we all knew that she needed to go, and we didn't want her to suffer anymore.
We visited for a little while and then had to head home.
Before we left my aunt Georgia told Jan and I to take some of my grandma's nightgowns
if we wanted to, so we did.

I'm really glad that I saw grandma the day before yesterday.
Marcy and I went to her house to help with
more house cleaning and going through things with my mom.
I went in to see grandma and she wasn't looking very good.
I kissed her and told her I loved her, and I combed her hair a little bit.
Then I just held her hand for a little while.

While we were there, I put on one of my grandma's sweaters because it was a little chilly.
I put my hand in the pocket and felt something.
A tissue and a toothpick.
It made me smile. It seemed like my grandma always had these things with her.
I have countless images in my mind of my grandma with a toothpick in her mouth.
I am thankful for ordinary things and little moments like this that remind me of her.
It seems strange that her time on this earth is over.
She is pretty much the best person I've ever known.
I'm so blessed that I got to have her for my grandma.
I miss her.
I do know that she will always be with me and that I can think about her anytime I want to.
I already keep tissues with me, but maybe I'll start carrying a toothpick with me too :)

Long Live the Queen

My Grandma (she's 95 years old!) was selected as the DUP (Daughters of the Utah Pioneers) Queen of Days of 47.
Here she is with her attendants
She attended a Pioneer Day fireside where she was introduced to Elder Holland.
She also went to her first rodeo in many years for an appearance.
And of course she got to ride in the parade on Monday.
She said it was fun but exhausting. My uncle said that she was acting like a "giddy school girl"... and I say why not! I'm so happy for her.
As you can tell, my Grandma is a purple lover too :)

The rest of our trip to Georgia

One of the great things about going to my high school reunion was getting to spend some time with family.
My brother Bob and his family are moving from Georgia to Utah while he does a tour in Iraq, so this was a good chance to see them before they left.
My brother Bob is a doctor,
he's also a lot of fun!

Which doctor would you trust?
#1 is auditioning for Grey's Anatomy
(in fact Dallin asked me why Uncle Bob
was looking like a male model)
and I hear that #3 takes all insurances
and has no wait, ha ha!
Well, Doctor #2 graciously agreed to give Noah a physical for scout camp.
Thank you, thank you!
My parents and my sister Jan
and her family also live there.
Grace and Anna adore their Aunt Jan!
Jan's son Titus played us a beautiful song that he wrote and performed at his senior assembly. He is so talented!
My mom wrote a book and my Dad illustrated it, they gave a copy to each child and grandchild...I got a picture of Grace with hers.
It was nice to get to spend Father's Day with my Dad...even though he doesn't believe in Father's Day :) I sure do love him!
Mike got his Father's Day gifts when we got home (I didn't get pictures of him with the gifts the kids made...oops!)
Mike has some relatives in Georgia also. We had planned on visiting with his Grandma "Nanny" but didn't plan on visiting her in the hospital. She had a huge kidney stone and 2 strokes while we were at my parents. (She has since had a couple more strokes and a heart attack, but is recovering.) On Sunday night we went to the hospital where she was.
She was responsive and aware of us while we were there. We are glad that we got to see her and some more of Mike's relatives.

It was a very short trip, but we packed in as much as we could, and still made it home in time for Noah to attend a Boy Scout workshop and earn 2 merit badges before heading off to scout camp.

Still Young

Happy Birthday to Mike!
Yesterday he turned 35.
He requested cupcakes and when it was present time he tore into the gifts like a little kid.
He's still young :)
Truth is I think that the kids were more excited for his birthday than he was. I could be wrong, but unlike me, he doesn't seem to like to be the center of attention!
I think he had a good birthday even though his main gift (a new lap top) wasn't here for the festivities. The lap top is actually a combined birthday / fathers day gift and he'll get it soon.

Anyway, he's a wonderful husband and father and friend, and we love him very much!

Also a little shout out to my Grandma who shares a birthday with Mike...Happy 94th Birthday Grandma!
She's still young too!
